ECOtec Race Engines Win in Powerboat Racing
The 2007 APBA Inboard Powerboat Circuit saw the introduction of two ECOtec-powered hydroplane boats in the 2.5L Modified class.
Mr. Bud Racing of Lafayette, Louisiana had the naturally-aspirated ECOtec race engines installed in their hydroplane boats by Roush Industries in Livonia, Michigan. The engine, based on the production 2.2L L61 ECOtec, was modified with 3.500-inch sleeves, Eagle crank and rods, JE pistons, and a Cometic headgasket.
The production L61 ECOtec head was ported specifically for this application, modified to accept high-lift cams, and assembled with GM Performance Parts adjustable cam gears, Ferrea valves and keepers, PSI springs, and Trick Titanium retainers. This naturally aspirated race engine runs on E85 fuel, produces about 340 horsepower, and turns 9,000-10,000 rpm. read more...

SEMA 2007: Still Feeling It!
The SEMA madness has its lingering effects! Mainly from the sore feet and tired body due to the fact that you walk over three million square feet and are usually out all night long from party to party!
Yes I can hear you all playing your violins for me now ...
Is it worth it? The pain, the tired and beat-up bodies, and the Vegas madness?
Ahh ... you bet it is! read more...

SEMA 2007: Day Two
Wednesday kicked off Day Two of SEMA.
It seemed that Wednesday was busier than Tuesday, which is very strange. Usually opening day holds the heaviest traffic at the SEMA show, but not this year.
Regardless of when the traffic poured in, it definitely poured in! Loads of people all over the show and, better than that, each day seemed to get better for us as we walked the show and found more great cars and incredible builds.
There was a lot of buzz around the GM booth as well. read more...

Ladwig Wins Pomona, While Gardella Holds On to Capture NHRA Pro FWD Season Crown
The 2007 Sport Compact Drag Racing season has come to an end, and the Chevy Cobalt Pro FWD teams put on a great final show.
Marty Ladwig grabbed the win at Pomona with an exciting round against Gary Gardella, who took home the season championship. And one more accolade for Gary Gardella this season: UrbanRacer.com Driver of the Year! What a great surprise for Gary to be awarded this honor.
In case you didn’t notice, Chevy Cobalts swept the Pro FWD category in 2007 with three wins for Jason Hunt, three for Marty Ladwig, and four for Gary Gardella. All three held the top spot in the championship point race at some time during the season. All three set national elapsed-time records over the course of the season. I couldn’t be more proud of our Chevy Cobalt teams. They worked their butts off this year and deserved every bit of glory they got. read more...

Formula Drift Final This Weekend
This weekend’s Formula D final at the House of Drift in Irwindale, Calif. promises to be great, as the whole drifting world is focused on what is going on here in the U.S. The points race is so tight that any of three different drivers could emerge as champion, depending on who wins the final event.
Pontiac has had great success in drifting with its world-class driver Rhys Millen. Rhys already has a Formula D championship and also has finished second in the last couple of years. This year, Rhys and his new Pontiac Solstice are in fourth place in the points chase, with a very good chance to move high up this weekend. read more...

Don Nase Isn’t Scared of Any Blown V8s
Listen up race fans, Don Nase and his turbocharged ECOtec GM dragster went up to the I.H.R.A Torco Race Fuels Nitro Jam, which held its “President's Cup Nationals.” To say the least, Don went up there and represented what GM and the Sport Compact scene has evolved into.
First, let’s break down what Don went up against. The class he ran in is the Top Dragster class. Now this class is primarily dominated by old-school, big-block and small-block motors that are supercharged or spraying nitrous. Normally to qualify in this class with these big-displacement engines, you need something like a 7.10-second elapsed time.
Yeah … VERY FAST! read more...

Gardella’s 7.239-second run got him to the stripe before Hunt’s 7.237 second pass. Then, I blinked, squinted, and rubbed my eyes . . . the timing board displayed a speed of 209.59 mph for Gary Gardella. read more...
