Ballard, Hunt win big at NHRA Moroso

by Carmen Smith Filed Under:

The weather couldn’t have been better for NHRA Sport Compact’s season opener at Moroso Motorsports Park in Jupiter, Florida, and the crowds came out en masse.

In the end, the weekend was great. The CSI team, with drivers Jason Hunt in Pro FWD and Brian Ballard in Quick16, really came through for Chevrolet and ECOtec. They were focused and determined, knowing that they were fighting for an important head start in the championship points race. They got it, well deserved. Congratulations, CSI, on a dual-winning weekend.

We were ecstatic to see such a great turnout, but the weekend was not all smiles for us at GM Racing. Especially for me. . . I think this new-car stuff is giving me an ulcer.

As for Gary Gardella and Marty Ladwig. . . even though their weekend did not end in wins, these brand-new Chevy Cobalt race cars showed great potential. We at GM Racing tend to be pretty demanding, but, honestly, for brand-new cars this early in the season, they’re doing very well. The cars are fast, fast, fast, and it won’t be long before the numbers on the board prove it.

I need to leave the stressing to our competitors. Gardella ECOtec-Moroso

With some rigorous pre-event testing and all four Pro cars competing this weekend, I thought we’d be taking home some blown motors. But there wasn’t one engine that didn’t make it though the race weekend. Maybe I should knock on wood, but we really couldn’t be happier with the ECOtec race engine program.

After a high-anxiety weekend, I’m feeling mostly gratitude. Thanks to our race teams for keeping their eye on the ball and doing what needs to be done to succeed. Thanks to our exceptional track-support team for working tirelessly and for putting up with me. And thanks to everyone who’s been involved with our engine-development program and our invaluable engine builders who give us ECOtec race motors (pictured here) that just won’t quit.

A final congratulations to Jason Whitfield, who put his Chevy Cobalt in the number one spot out at the CMI event in Sacramento last weekend. Great job.

See you in Virginia for the next NHRA Sport Compact event.
