Millen Second in New Jersey, Eyes Finals

by Andy Williamson Filed Under:

Formula D rolled into Wall, NJ this past weekend, thrilling the East Coast fans, who have been waiting for the FD series to hit town.

And fans showed their excitement in attendance and enthusiasm on Saturday. They came to see full-throttle, tire-smoking, head-to-head drifting.

That’s exactly what they got!

In the heavy crowd of talented drivers and beautiful cars, stood the Pontiac Solstice GXP running top notch and piloted by Rhys Millen. Rhys had the Solstice performing incredibly well all weekend. His lines were nice and tight, and the GXP can straight lay down incredible clumes of smoke! The crowd stood and cheered as Rhys ran the GXP hard and strong through each and every run!

Rhys was a man on a mission, setting his sights on winning this event. Plus, he was feeling good because he celebrated a birthday over the weekend! (Happy Birthday, Rhys, from your GM family and friends).

Rhys and his GXP battled hard through the rounds, landing in the top four and facing Tanner Foust, the Formula D points leader in the semifinals. The two drivers battled it out hard, and even ran into the crowd and judges forcing them to a set of “One More Time” runs.

In the end, Rhys and his GXP beat out Tanner to land him in the finals facing Dai Yoshihara.

The final round was a tough-fought battle between Millen and Yoshihara. They traded blows back and forth and had the crowd on its feet the whole time. This was a final worth waiting for and everyone had their eyes fixed on these two cars. Rhys battled hard to the end, but came up a few points short of the win.

Rhys took home second place overall, which is extremely exciting and honorable.

We know Rhys very well and know that second place was not enough, but we are very proud of him and feel very good about his chances going into the finals at Irwindale on October 13. Rhys is sitting in fourth place right now in points, and with a win at Irwindale, he could really climb the ladder.

We are extremely excited for both Rhys and Pontiac, as this year has been filled with great action! Drifting is here to stay and we’re exciting to see the Pontiac Solstice GXP out there competing at such a high level!
