Koni Challenge – Daytona Beach

by Andy Williamson Filed Under:

We recently took a trip over to Daytona Beach, FL where the Koni Challenge was taking place right before the big Rolex Cup 24-Hour Race.

The weather was absolutely perfect for this race, which made the cars run that much better. The Koni Challenge is an exciting venue for sportsmen racers to come out and push their cars to the limit.

There are two classes in the Koni Challenge: “Street Tuner” and “Grand Sport.”

Chevy Cobalts run in the Street Tuner category and have done very well in the past!/ This year was no exception; the seven Cobalts racing in the Koni Challenge did great!

This is a start to a new year and many of the teams are extremely excited to get out there and compete. Last year the Cobalt teams were running the Cobalt SS supercharged engines, but this year they converted more than cars to the new 2.0L I4 turbo motor and did all of this within a month’s time!

That’s right Cobalt fans; these guys are running the new motor that will be under the hood in the 2008 Cobalt SS.

Yes, we know what you’re asking right now: Is anyone going to tell us how they did this swap? I asked the same question, and from the sound of it, it looks like they are preparing a brand new build book that will cover the Cobalt Grand AM Cup cars, and the book will have info in there on how they made this conversion! More on that soon!

Congratulations goes out to all of the Cobalt teams that ran this past weekend, and a big round of applause to the Georgian Bay Motorsports team, which came in fifth overall, posting great lap times throughout the race.

The Cobalt teams have a lot to be excited about after seeing the performance of the new engines at this race. There was some reservation going into the race, because they didn’t know how well the new engines would perform, especially after receiving restrictions on what they could do to the motor. These motors are not only stock – they are even detuned, running lower boost pressure for this series to make the field “fair” for the other teams. If they are doing this well detuned, imagine what they’ll do with some basic upgrades and added boost pressure!

If you have a chance to make it out and watch a Koni Challenge race, you will be in for a treat! Make sure to stop by and talk to the Cobalt teams. They are great guys and love to talk racing!
